Some of you might be aware that I’ve been fighting the battle of the bulge my whole life. It is a never-ending battle and I have to say it gets pretty exhausting at times. Previously, I took the courage to write about how I’ve been struggling with my weight from a young age. If you haven’t read about it, you can read it here.
When I wrote that post, I was happily tipping the scales at 53kg. However, since then to now (about 1.5 years), I’ve put on a horrifying 7kg. I’m not afraid to tell people my weight. I think there’s nothing to be ashamed about and it shows on the body anyway. I’ve been receiving all kinds of comments over the past year about how I’ve gotten fat, I’ve gone out of shape, I put on a lot of weight etc. etc.
I have to admit that it hurts, especially when I can no longer fit into my pretty dresses. Nowadays I keep sticking to my oversized manly t-shirts and berms. My self-esteem has also taken a beating. So how did I put on so much weight?
Well, 2012 was a year of travels for me. Every month I would be travelling and at some points, I was travelling every weekend. When you get busy, you start to pay less attention to your diet. When you travel, you’re always on the move and sometimes there is a lack of healthy choices. As a result, I reached out for ‘convenient foods’ such as biscuits, breakfast bars, cornflakes. While they sound pretty harmless, I ate them in excess.. simply because it’s hard to feel full from such foods.
I wasn’t exercising, I stopped going for yoga classes and so all the pounds came piling on. I was on Herbalife for a year but it didn’t work for me for some reason and I put on 6kg instead. The weight stayed and never went away. When I saw this photo of me interviewing Nico Rosberg, I knew I had to be more serious about getting back in shape.
Just look at those big arms and bulging tummy… you haven’t even seen the thighs and the ass yet.
Anyway, I decided I had to step up the efforts and do something about it.
I stayed away from slimming pills because I don’t believe in quick loss. The quicker you lose, the faster you will gain it back, especially if you don’t know how to maintain the weight loss after. However, when I was introduced to the GLOW BFF (Berry Fruity Fat-loss) Challenge, I was happy to hear that it isn’t just a go-on-the-diet-pill-and-see-who-loses-the-most-weight contest. Essentially, the people at GLOW want to help us change our lifestyles and live it right with the help of GLOW. That means having a healthy diet and exercising right, hence convincing me to take it up.
This is the second GLOW BFF Challenge being held, in conjunction with the launch of their enhanced version – GLOW IGNITE 2.0. Basically, the Challenge is a month-long programme with professional advice from their in-house nutritionist who will plan our meals for us, as well as workouts three times a week.
I could easily jog 10km three times a week but I wasn’t seeing any weight loss results. I was then told that I needed to do high intensity interval training, because keeping to the same routine would keep your body in the comfort zone and hence not shed any pounds. GLOW has engaged a personal trainer to coach us, as well as have us go for kickboxing, yoga and zumba classes for a variety of workout.
The objective of the programme is to get us to lead a healthy lifestyle, which will in turn help us to cut the weight.
GLOW IGNITE 2.0 is a 100 per cent natural proprietary blend of powerful fat burning botanical extracts, clinically proven to promote weight loss. Made in USA and backed by 20 clinical studies, the synergistic formulation combines the powerful fat burning effects of Raspberry Ketones with patented Svetol® (decaffeinated green coffee bean extract) and the natural slimming properties of the African Mango to maximise individual’s body’s fat burning process for fast and effective weight loss results.
There are about 12 of us bloggers on this programme and I managed to drag my girlfriend Silver into this so I will have someone to accompany me through the journey.
The meals that I’m supposed to eat are really simple and clean – think wholemeal bread with plain tuna (no mayonnaise!), brown rice, boiled chicken breast, vegetables, fruits. I used to think my diet of white bread and a lot of vegetables would help me lose weight, but apparently it’s unhealthy and wrong. With all the exercise I do (I work out at least three times a week now), I need protein in my diet!
With all the different things I’ve done to my body previously to lose weight, I was told that it might take me some time to adjust to this, so my results may not be as quick as the others. I will update you with my progress as we go along. Meanwhile, please wish me luck. I want to get back in shape!
