This might sound like a form of betrayal, but I actually have slightly more preference for a coupe over a cabriolet. I do drive a little convertible at the moment (the Honda S2000), but if it came in a coupe version I would have gone for that instead.
The main difference between a coupe and a cabriolet is the roof – one can be brought down, the other cannot. I always like two-door cars because of how they look – sleek. There is some compromise in boot space and passenger capacity, but as long as you can live with that then it’s fine. I feel that this is the best time for me to drive a two-door because I’m not married with kids yet, so there is less need for space in the car.
Of course, if the cabriolets come in a hard top, then it can be considered a coupe-cabriolet. I actually prefer a cabriolet with a hard top to one with a soft top, simply because it can then be viewed as a coupe!
Why do I prefer coupes over cabriolets?
Firstly, I’m not a great fan of driving with the roof down. In Singapore, the weather is either bloody hot or raining cats or dogs; so I generally don’t drive with the roof down. In fact, I rarely drive with the roof down. The unpredictability of the weather is just too much of a risk for me to take sometimes. For example, it can be clear in this part of the island but suddenly you drive into another zone and you find yourself in rain drops. So far, in the few times I got the roof down, I’ve thankfully not encountered anything unlucky like that.
Sometimes the night breeze can be pleasantly cool and driving with the top down is quite pleasurable, especially when coupled with my favourite techno beats. However, having long hair causes quite an inconvenience when driving with the roof down. Those advertisements you see of ladies in convertibles with their hair flowing nicely behind them are all fake or plotted. Even with the windows up, it is quite hard to drive with the hair blowing nicely out behind you.
Most of the time, I end up having my hair whipped into my face, blocking my vision. Tying up the hair into a ponytail doesn’t help either. By the time I get to my destination, I end up having my hair in knots and for some reason it feels a little oily too. I did find a solution to this hair-all-over-the-face problem though – roll the hair together to one side and tuck the ends into the bra strap. Disclaimer – this only works if the hair is long enough to be tucked in.
These are all reasons that justify my slight preference of coupes over cabriolets – the weather and the hair mainly. There’s also something about coupes that are sexier. Some of you may notice this as well, but a cabriolet may have a rear end that ‘sticks out’ more. This is more obvious when you compare the coupe and cabriolet versions of the same model – like the Nissan 350Z for example. The rear end of the roadster just doesn’t flow as sleek as the coupe.
Speaking of the Fairlady, that’s one of my all-time favourite coupes! Other two-door cars that I like are the Hyundai Genesis, Nissan GT-R, Volkswagen Scirocco, BMW Z4, BMW M6, Audi RS5, Audi R8 and the Ferrari 458 Italia, just to name some. Well, that doesn’t mean I have any less love for the S2000, I just don’t go topless often. *winks*
