Tata Young: Then & Now

Written by Cheryl Tay on . Posted in Cheryl Tay Blog | Blog Post of Cheryl Tay

I remember sometime during my Victoria Junior College days, I hummed and danced along to the catchy tunes of controversial yet sensational hit single ’Sexy Naughty Bitchy’ by Tata Young – this uber hot and popular Thai singing diva of Eurasian blood mix.

Remember her?

Her first English album “I Believe” had a few hit songs and I really liked listening to them.

(see video below for her recent performance of this song)

After that period I never heard of her anymore… until the Goodyear tyre launch I attended in Thailand a few months back.

After strings of videos of the two new tyres and a couple of important speeches by senior Goodyear management, a special celebrity was invited to the Sheraton Hua Hin ballroom to perform for us guests. It was none other than Thai singer Tata Young.

Seated right at the back of the huge ballroom, I excitedly made my way to the front so I could get good shots of the singing star. When Tata burst onto stage amid the tyre displays, I couldn’t recognise her at first.

She sang both English and Thai songs and entertained the crowd quite a bit. I think I wasn’t the only one in shock. This other Malaysian journalist sitting at the same table as me rushed to the front with me too, but got so disappointed that he merely snapped a few shots and went back to his seat. I however, supportively stayed up front for the entire length of her segment!281486_235273996506845_131620790205500_739408_8291545_n262852_235274929840085_131620790205500_739438_7337312_n

Here’s a recent video of her performing at this Goodyear event (same song as the video above):

Reading up on the internet, I found out that she developed hypothyroidism and treatment for it caused her to gain weight and hence had to change her image. See, it’s a health condition – you think she doesn’t feel bad enough about it already? I think she’s very brave to continue pursuing her dream and remaining in the entertainment industry, even revamping her image (from hot sexy young thing to mature classy woman).

I just recently blogged about how I used to be fat and how society was such a b*tch and being prejudiced against fat people, so I can only imagine a fraction of how she feels –  especially since she is in the heart of the entertainment world where looks are everything!

Nonetheless, her humourous personality livened up the audience and brought laughs to all. She was being quite a bimbo, but I think it was all part of the act. This is entertainment, baby.

I wanted to get a photo with her but she rushed off quickly after she was done! :(
