Singapore GP: Formula 1 talks for schools

Written by Cheryl Tay on . Posted in Cheryl Tay Blog | Blog Post of Cheryl Tay

In the lead-up to the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix 2013, race promoter Singapore GP has a slew of activities as part of the ‘Rev Up Singapore!’ campaign to share the Formula 1 spirit throughout our sunny (recently a bit hazy) island.

One of the initiatives is the Singapore GP School Visit programme – it was introduced last year and after receiving good response, they are expanding it this year.

Singapore GP will be bringing Formula 1 to 15 secondary schools. There will be simulators, interactive game stations and an educational talk… presented by me! :)

Yes, I’m really excited to be the one giving the talks!

Last year I had the opportunity to give talks for F1 in Schools events and I’m always happy to promote motorsports to youths.

I gave the first one at Ngee Ann Secondary School on Tuesday morning, in front of about 1,600 students and they took some time to warm up (it was 8am in the morning on the second day back at school after the month-long June holidays) but they were really interactive during the Q&A session.. to the point where we had to cut the session :(

Four students will be getting the chance to go for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Formula 1 paddock two weeks before the Grand Prix and I got to pick one (basically the one whom I think asked the best question). He asked a question about Ayrton Senna and how he would fare against today’s drivers if he was still around. This student obviously knows his stuff!

Anyway, here are the list of schools I will be giving talks to:

1) Ngee Ann Secondary

2) Woodlands Secondary

3) Coral Secondary

4) Ping Yi Secondary

5) CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh)

6) Boon Lay Secondary

7) North View Secondary

8) Outram Secondary

9) Yuhua Secondary

10) Dunman Secondary

11) Pei Hwa Secondary

12) Montfort Secondary

13) Crescent Girls’ Secondary

14) Northbrooks Secondary

15) Bedok Town Secondary

Is your school on the list? If it isn’t, don’t be disheartened! There’s always next year :) ))

Meanwhile, I was really happy to speak with the student journalists of Ngee Ann Secondary after the talk. They prepared the questions and recorded down the interview – so pro!

Flying visit of Scuderia Ferrari driver Alonso to Shell Fuel Laboratory

The two-time Formula 1 World Champion and Scuderia Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, 31, visited the Shell Technology Centre Hamburg on Wednesday

Among other things, the Spaniard went to see laboratories and test facilities in the heart of the motor fuel research and development department at Shell. Prior to the German Grand Prix at Nürburgring, Alonso praised Shell’s long-standing technical partnership with Ferrari in Formula 1. One of the reasons for his visit was that the premium race fuel Shell V-Power Racing, which has been designed according to motor racing findings, has been available on the German market with a new improved formula since June.
