Sister Bonding @Taipei: Shilin Night Market

Written by Cheryl Tay on . Posted in Cheryl Tay Blog | Blog Post of Cheryl Tay

How can anyone not go to the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) when in Taipei? The food and shopping is something you must see, even if you don’t buy anything.

Getting there is easy – just hop on the MRT and get to Shilin station.

The Shilin street snacks are famous and you must try the fried milk, sausages and chicken cutlet…

Food and clothes aside, there was something interesting that I found at Shilin too:

No, I was not getting slaughtered to be cooked, but I was getting what they call – a knife massage.

Using special knife blades made for this unique massage therapy, a knife massage is said to release the body’s stored energy, increase blood flow and eliminate harmful toxins.

This shop I went to is called Museum of Alien Studies (外星人博物館), which is also a foundation that focuses on scientific research on aliens and extraterrestrials.

It wasn’t painful and I actually found it quite relaxing. For just NT$99 (about S$4.50), you get 10 minutes on the neck and shoulders. Pay NT$220 (about S$10) and you get another 10 minutes for your back. I woke up the next morning with a little bruise on the right shoulder and I feel a little sore between the blades, but other than that I thought it did me some good.

Do check out the Shilin Night Market when you are in Taipei, but be aware that it is a night market after all and only opens at 5.00pm!
