Remembering the first Formula 1 night race

Written by Cheryl Tay on . Posted in Cheryl Tay Blog | Blog Post of Cheryl Tay

I was just browsing through some past albums on my Facebook and I found the album “F1-SingTel Singapore Grand Prix 2008″. Aahhhhh.. that was the first ever Formula 1 night race, the inaugural Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

f1-singapore-gp_hiresThis year marks the 5th edition of the Marina Bay racing extravanganza and I am keeping my fingers ever so tightly crossed that the government will renew the F1 contract so that we can continue to have this wonderful heart-rushing motorsports highlight of the year.

It has brought lots of tourism dollars and also helped to put Singapore on the map – finally I can tell people (when I’m overseas) that Singapore is the country that hosts the F1 night race! I get tired of hearing how Singapore is ‘part of China’.

Anyway, I shall not turn this into some long-drawn post on how Formula 1 has boosted our economy and how the local motorsports scene needs to have F1, especially when our permanent track may not materialise.

I just want to share the photos I took at the 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix! I’ve not missed a single F1 SGP and although I attended all in the capacity of work (think running around from event to interview to media centre to file stories, out to event again then interview again and so on etc. etc.), I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

When I feel tired and weary, I just stand in the middle of the paddock and close my eyes, allowing the sounds of the F1 engine roars fill my head and a smile slowly forms around my head – “This is why I’m here,” I find myself telling myself, “This is my passion.”

Remember the Felipe Massa fuel rig incident?
(I actually have the video of it happening.)
