Formula Drift S’pore 2011: Benjamin Chiam’s SHOCKING Weight Loss

Written by Cheryl Tay on . Posted in Cheryl Tay Blog | Blog Post of Cheryl Tay

I remember Benjamin Chiam as the youngest Singaporean drifter to participate in Formula Drift Asia, drifting before he even attained his driving licence. I read about him in the papers as he had quite a publicity wave then. (P.S. he also has exactly the same birthdate as me! But he’s a lot younger of course…)

I got to interview him end of last year (see here for the interview: and when I asked for photos he told me he lost a lot of weight due to the great-nation-thing called National Service. He didn’t have too many photos of the thinner him so I didn’t really notice the difference.

But when I saw him at the registration desk of this year’s Formula Drift Singapore, I couldn’t recognise him at all! Even his Thai buddies whom he learnt drifting from couldn’t tell it was him!!

He went from this:

Here’s what Benji has to say about his life-changing move:

“I lost 45kg during Basic Military Training (three-month period) at Tekong, where I went through 19 weeks of training with Bronco company. It feels awesome to be fit again – chicks start noticing you, people don’t look down on you anymore, I’m able to wear anything I want now and I look good!”

What about drifting? Has losing weight improved his drift?

“Now I can easily hop in and out of the car and I can go round and round the track without feeling exhausted. I feel more confident and I can do much more than before!”

Other than Formula Drift Singapore, Benji will be competing in the M-Max Drift Series in Thailand.

I want to lose just 5kg, maybe I should go to NS for a month or something! ;)

Well done Benji, I know how you feel - In case you readers weren’t aware, I used to be overweight (65kg at my heaviest) and I have to admit that life has been different for me after slimming down too.

From that to this:

Sadly, society really treats you differently when you are thinner.
