As the 2011 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix rolls around the corner, I thought I would dig up the F1 interviews which I did for The New Paper last year. F1 is like Hollywood on the track and the drivers are the main stars. It’s not easy to secure interviews with them – unless you are like some big shot media who gets priority access to them – so I am really really really lucky for any opportunity I get!
This is the proud poster that I created last year after the Singapore Grand Prix and I even have it in A2 size on my wall! A thought just crossed my mind now – would anyone want this poster if I were to print some more of it? Ha ha ha!
Last season I interviewed the following personalities:
1. Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing
2. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull Racing
3. Christian Horner, Team Principal, Red Bull Racing
4. Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer, Red Bull Racing
5. Felipe Massa, Scuderia Ferrari
6. Nico Hulkenberg, Williams
7. Heikki Kovalainen, Lotus Racing
8. Jarno Trulli, Lotus Racing
9. Tony Fernandes, Team Principal, Lotus Racing
10. Sebastien Buemi, Scuderia Toro Rosso
11. Jaime Alguersuari, Scuderia Toro Rosso
I remember coming up with an F1 driver trivia for them and it was quite funny as I asked them questions like “Boxers or Brief” and “Tattoo or Piercing”. Surprisingly, they were all very accommodating and they took my quiz in good humour… except for Nico Hulkenberg who told me off for asking non-racing questions. Well, I read up on him before the interview so I didn’t want to ask what everyone else could already find on the internet! Oh well, he’s out of F1 this year but I do sincerely hope he makes it back one day – that kid can drive!
Through interviewing these drivers, I realised that they are ordinary people like you and me, but of course they have a wonderful talent and passion that only so few in the world are allowed to embrace. Some of the drivers on the track are younger than me and it makes me wonder sometimes what the hell I’m doing with my life. Nah just kidding, I love my life and am living the passion too.. just that it doesn’t pay as well as their passion does!
It’s their job to drive well and like most of us, they just want to do their best in their jobs. When they have off days, they do normal everyday things like hang out with friends, go on holidays with loved ones or just stay home to sleep. But yes, they are Formula 1 drivers after all – life can’t be as normal as ours!
Over the next few days, I’ll be re-posting my F1 interviews from last year just for you. This year it is a lot harder to get interviews of the Red Bull Racing team after they’ve become World Champion! And I hope I’ll have the courage to approach Michael Schumacher for a photo when I see him in the paddock.. last year I froze when he walked past me and I didn’t dare to go up to him. *sheepish* Yes, I get starstruck too…
