CNY Day 1: Triple Ds in da house!

Written by Cheryl Tay on . Posted in Cheryl Tay Blog | Blog Post of Cheryl Tay

Local karter Daim Hishammudin was back in Singapore briefly over the pre-Lunar New Year weekend with his family and they popped by my place to say ‘Hi’!

Why ‘Triple Ds’? Because Dhaniyah, Daim and Dorrah!

I first wrote about Daim back in 2009 when I received a random press release that mentioned a certain Singaporean karter. I had my weekly motorsports column, Va-Va Vroom, in The New Paper then and was on the lookout to feature Singaporean drivers for the paper.

I got in touch with Daim’s parents – Hisham and Su – and Daim’s first newspaper article in English in Singapore was written by me (Berita Harian was already reporting on his racing then but that’s a Malay newspaper)! I still remember the title was “Born in Singapore, Made in Malaysia“, as Daim is Singaporean but currently residing in Malaysia.

I have been reporting on Daim’s progress regularly since and hence have been present at his major milestones, such as the launch of the AirAsia ASEAN Driver Development Programme in 2010, the press conference of his CIMB sponsorship deal in 2010, his first WSK European race in 2010, the Team Lotus AirAsia Driver Development Programme launch in 2011 and other races of his.

Yesterday I made them a photo collage, with photos of us from 2 years ago when I first knew them in early 2010, on one of my trips to Kuala Lumpur.

Daim has really grown up since his longer-haired high-pitched voice days…

Here are some photos:

Yes, they call me ‘Auntie Cheryl’ and since then more of the young drivers at the track refer to me as ‘Auntie’ too! :p

Note how they have grown up over a short span of just two years?
